The sign seems harmless enough right?  In fact, I think it is great we are putting reminders out there that motorcycles are harder to see and we need to pay special attention.  Several San Diego residents apparently disagree. According to JANET LAVELLE of the Union Tribune, the reaction to this sign has been very negative with about a dozen callers complaining to San Diego CalTrans including a 20 minute rant.  The negative response was not expected and contrasts heavily with the positive calls received throughout most of the state.  The anger seems to stem from motorcycles sharing lanes.  While not necessary safe, it is a legal practice.

In addition, the statistics regarding motorcycle accident deaths in San Diego county rose 225% from 16 motorcycle accident deaths in 1999 to 52 in 2008.  In comparison, the increase statewide was a much lower 130%.

As lawyers that represent those injured in San Diego motorcycle accidents, the reaction of the public and the dramatic increase in the number of motorcycle accident deaths is disturbing.   And we would like to thank CalTrans for putting the messages up on the highways.  Indeed, we salute any measure that might help the safety of all drivers on roads.  We encourage everyone to take heed of the CalTrans message.
